The Courtyard

By kerricolegrove - Posted on 02 February 2009

Once upon a time a lovely woman, a princess of sorts, built a great garden, criss-crossed with flower-lined pathways leading to beautiful places.

There was a play place with a sand box in which she buried coins and other treasures, mainly broken costume jewelry bits, strings of shiny faux pearls and clusters of sparkly plastic gemstones that children were always thrilled to find.

There was a quiet place with a stone throne in which to sit and gaze at a massive crystalline ball while listening to the soft splish-splash of a nearby fountain.

And there was a dining place with a large wooden table and a generous assortment of chairs of every shape and style, all colorfully appointed with thick cushions.

And all who entered this garden were greeted by hosts who never left, colorful statues of a beautiful princess and her friends, then escorted through the garden by more statues, mainly an abundance of frogs.

And many came to visit her in this garden, where she shared with them many of the best times of her life. Still, she yearned for an extra special friend, a worthy prince.

Then one eay, early one morning, she went to her garden with a pick axe and a spade and a rake. And she walked in and along the main pathway until she arrived at the place where it met the next one. And there she began prying out of the ground the large rocks that lined this intersection. And she dug up and set aside the plants. And she raked the area until the ground was smooth and flat and formed a large circle.

In the days that followed, she began lining th edge of this circle with the large rocks from the old intersection, and created corners where the formerly crossing paths now spilled into the big circle at four places. And she worked the plants she'd dug up and set aside into the edges of this new courtyard.

One morning, on a dolly, into the garden she wheeled a new stone throne and positioned it next to the other.

On another morning she returned with her spade and buried every last frog statue.

On yet another morning she arrived with a new statue, a handsome prince, which she placed next to the princess.

Then she carried on as usual, sharing many of the best times of her life with her friends in her garden. They adored merry-making in the new courtyard she'd created and helped her string the giant oak that canopied above with fanciful decorator lights, mini-guitars that created the whimsical impression that the music wafting out from hidden speakers was produced by little people hidden behind the glowing instruments. And this inspired her to bring her big table with the playful chairs with colorful plush cushions into this space so she and her guests could spend more and more time there. Shortly after, she moved both of the thrones into the courtyard too. And before long, fine, new guests began coming into her garden.

Suddenly she found herself surrounded by worthy suitors. Now it wouuldn't be long before she discovered which one made her smile and laugh most, which one would become her extra special friend.
